BMW 2 Series

2026-09-29 15:40:01

The BMW 2 Series is the BMW Group’s compact luxury model family, officially spun off as a standalone nameplate in 2014 to carry forward the brand’s compact sporting heritage. Over more than a decade of evolution, the 2 Series has expanded into a versatile lineup encompassing the Coupe, Gran Coupe, and Multi-Purpose Vehicle (Active Tourer) body styles, offered in the Chinese market via both fully imported (CBU) and locally assembled (CKD) channels. The 2026 BMW 2 Series was officially launched on 26 January 2026, taking on key rivals such as the Mercedes-Benz A-Class and Audi A3.

Design Language

The BMW 2 Series range adopts distinct design languages tailored to its different body styles.

The Coupe (CBU import) retains BMW’s quintessential front-engine, rear-wheel-drive sports car proportions. Up front, it features a slim kidney grille flanked by signature Angel Eye LED headlights. A long bonnet, short front overhang, and rearward-shifted cabin underscore its classic longitudinal rear-wheel-drive layout. Dimensions measure 4,556 mm in length, 1,838 mm in width, and 1,405 mm in height, with a 2,741 mm wheelbase. The rear end is highlighted by dual exhaust tailpipes and a diffuser, delivering an aggressive, low-slung, and wide-body stance. Over ten exterior paint options are available, including Black Sapphire, Mineral White, Thundernight Metallic, Portimao Blue, and Brooklyn Grey.

The Gran Coupe, locally built by BMW Brilliance, adopts a more practical four-door fastback silhouette. The front fascia similarly sports the iconic kidney grille and Angel Eye headlights, complemented by sleek profile lines and standard frameless doors across the entire range. It measures 4,534 mm long, 1,800 mm wide, and 1,434 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2,670 mm. The rear is styled with dual trapezoidal exhaust tailpipes.

Inside, the entire lineup receives BMW’s latest cabin design philosophy. The Coupe is fitted with a curved dual display comprising a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.9-inch infotainment touchscreen (on selected variants). The Gran Coupe also features the dual-screen setup, powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 chip. A variety of interior upholstery choices is on offer, including a blend of Vernasca leather and Alcantara.

Powertrain and Performance

The BMW 2 Series family provides a broad spectrum of powertrains to cater to diverse driving requirements, from daily commuting to spirited performance driving.

Coupe (CBU import): The 225i M Sport Pro is powered by a B48 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol engine producing 135 kW (184 PS) and 300 Nm of torque. The M240i steps up to a B58 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six engine churning out 245 kW (333 PS) and 500 Nm. Both engines are paired with an 8-speed Steptronic automatic transmission (8AT) as standard. The 225i completes the 0–100 km/h sprint in 7.5 seconds on to a top speed of 226 km/h, whereas the M240i does 0–100 km/h in 5.3 seconds with a 250 km/h top speed. The M240i is available in both rear-wheel drive and xDrive all-wheel drive configurations.

Gran Coupe (locally produced): The 225L is driven by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo unit rated at 204 PS (150 kW) and 300 Nm. The range-topping M235L is equipped with a high-output 2.0-litre turbo engine kicking out 300 PS (221 kW). Both variants come mated to a 7-speed wet dual-clutch transmission (DCT). The 225L achieves 0–100 km/h in 7.3 seconds, while the M235L delivers even sharper acceleration.

Active Tourer (MPV): Offers an extensive powertrain lineup comprising a 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbo, 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo, and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) options. The 225e xDrive PHEV variant pairs a 2.0-litre turbo engine with an electric motor setup.

Chassis and Handling

Drivetrain layouts vary significantly across the BMW 2 Series range, serving as the defining technical trait for each model’s distinct character.

The Coupe rides on a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive setup built on BMW’s longitudinal architecture. Suspension is handled by front MacPherson struts and a rear multi-link independent setup. Combined with a perfect 50:50 front-to-rear axle weight distribution and a low centre of gravity, the Coupe delivers uncompromised BMW driving dynamics. The M240i xDrive variant adds an intelligent on-demand AWD system, seamlessly blending rear-driven agility with all-wheel traction.

The Gran Coupe and Active Tourer are underpinned by a front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout (transverse FAAR platform), with the flagship M235L benefiting from xDrive all-wheel drive. Their suspension setups are tuned for everyday ride comfort and practicality, yet they still preserve BMW’s hallmark chassis poise and sharp steering feel.

Cabin and Equipment

Across the range, the cabin comes standard with the BMW iDrive operating system and intelligent voice control. The Gran Coupe features the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 chipset for smooth and responsive infotainment operation. Audiophiles are catered to with a premium Harman Kardon sound system on higher-spec variants. Convenience features include dual-zone automatic climate control, a wireless smartphone charging pad, and keyless entry with push-start button.

The Coupe comes in a 2-door, 4-seater configuration, whereas the Gran Coupe offers a 4-door, 5-seater layout. The Active Tourer places great emphasis on cabin practicality and versatile cargo arrangements, featuring 40:20:40 split-folding rear seats that expand boot space from 468 litres to between 1,455 and 1,510 litres.

Safety and Driver Assistance

The BMW 2 Series comes comprehensively equipped with active and passive safety features. Standard electronic aids across the entire range include Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA), Traction Control (TCS), and Dynamic Stability Control (DSC). Passive safety kit includes driver and front passenger airbags, front side airbags, and full-length curtain airbags. A Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) is also standard fitment.

On the active safety and driver assistance front, it features a Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS), packaging Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keeping Assist, Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Forward Collision Warning, Lane Change Assist, and Blind Spot Monitoring. A 360-degree surround-view camera and automated Parking Assistant are also included.

Market Performance and Value

In China, the BMW 2 Series targets different market segments through a dual "CBU import + CKD local production" product strategy. The Coupe is fully imported: the 2026 225i M Sport Pro is priced at RM288,000; the M240i carries a sticker price of RM398,000; and the M240i xDrive retails at RM418,000. The Gran Coupe is locally assembled by BMW Brilliance: the 225L M Sport starts at RM208,000, the 225L M Sport Pro at RM228,000, and the M235L at RM298,000.

Showroom discounts have been substantial. In selected regions, on-the-road cash prices for the Gran Coupe have dipped to the RM150,000–RM170,000 bracket, while the imported Coupe M240i enjoys cash rebates of up to RM50,000 in certain areas.

Each variant within the 2 Series family serves a distinct purpose: the Coupe focuses on unadulterated rear-wheel-drive driving pleasure and pure sports coupe styling as BMW's most accessible RWD sports car; the Gran Coupe appeals to younger buyers with its frameless doors, sleek fastback profile, and dynamic flair; while the Active Tourer prioritises everyday utility, versatile cabin packaging, and multi-purpose family motoring. As a well-rounded compact luxury family, the BMW 2 Series spans the spectrum from pure driver’s thrills to everyday family usability through its well-differentiated product matrix, carving out a unique niche in the entry-level premium segment.
